It’s a shame that the forces of bigotry won in Maine, denying marriage equality. But if you had put interracial marriage up for a vote in Mississippi in 1960 it would have lost too. Time is on our side. This country is slowly getting more progressive. Both marijuana and gay marriage will be legal in 10 years.

The governorship losses in New Jersey and Virginia are disappointing, but Democrats put up a weak candidate in Virginia, and Corzine fell victim to anti-incumbency sentiment (and his own incompetence).

The real bright spot for Democrats are the two special congressional elections. The California victory was expected, but Owens’ win in NY-23 was a real shocker. The national teabagger movement threw their support behind the far right Doug Hoffman, but he had zero charisma and went down in flames.

Bloomberg won a surprisingly tight race, but I’m chalking that up to apathy among his supporters. I didn’t bother to vote yesterday, but I would have gone for Bloomie. He’s doing a pretty damn good job.

The most overlooked story of the night was that Ohio is the new Nevada. We’ve legalized gambling. Cincinnati is getting a casino!

…because I’m directing most of my writing efforts to something else. I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month (which shortens its name to the unbearably cutesy NaNoWriMo).

I’m going to attempt to write a 50,000 word novel before December 1st.

50,000 words is actually fairly short for a novel — about 200 pages. But it’s still no joke. The columns I used to write for my college paper would take me at least a day or two to write, and those were only 800 words.

I’ll still post here a little. Maybe once or twice a day if something catches my eye. But other than that I’ll be completely devoted to my homoerotic Star Wars novel, tentatively entitled “Han & Luke: Forbidden Passions.”

You’ve got to be kidding me:

An epic film about Islam’s Prophet Mohammad backed by the producer of “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Matrix” is being planned with the aim of “bridging cultures”.

Filming of the $150-million English-language movie is set to start in 2011 with American Barrie Osborne as its producer, Qatari media company Alnoor Holdings said on Sunday.

The film - in which the Prophet would not be depicted, in accordance with Islamic rules - is in development and talks are being held with studios, talent agencies and distributors in the United States and Britain, Alnoor said.

Chances are the Muslims are still going to riot over this one anyway, whether they show Mohammad or not.

But I’m actually curious how they’re going to pull off a biopic without showing the subject onscreen. Maybe they’ll do it Doonesbury style.
